Heemskerk hails from the pristine, cool-climate region of Tasmania and produces wines that capture the purity and elegance of this increasingly popular region. A modern expression of pure Tasmanian luxury, the Heemskerk tier focuses on Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Riesling and Sparkling, while Abel’s Tempest by Heemskerk includes Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc and sparkling.

Through the violent tempests that raged around the coast of Tasmania, Dutchman Abel Tasman navigated his flagship, the Heemskerk, finally sighting the island’s west coast in 1642. Many of Tasman’s attempts to land were thwarted by these huge winds which, while frustrating Tasman, are integral to creating the cool climate that Tasmania’s vineyards thrive in.

The original Heemskerk vineyard was developed by Graham Wiltshire in 1975 with partners Bill Fesq, a Sydney wine merchant and Colin Haselgrove from Reynella Wines. The trio recognised the potential of the Tasmanian wine industry early in the piece.

Tasmania’s unique climate sets it apart from the majority of Australian wine growing regions, as it is the country’s only cool climate wine producing state. The pristine vineyards from which Heemskerk sources fruit have close proximity to the sea which keeps temperatures even and cool, and allows for long, slow, steady ripening.

Viticulturist Jamie Hewet works tirelessly to ensure we capture the best Tasmanian fruit and the Winemaker Peter Munro employs new world winemaking techniques with old-world influences to produce outstanding examples of the varieties that fare best in this region.
